Installing Anaconda Python on Ubuntu

As from the official website of said that Anaconda is the world’s most popular Python data science platform. Anaconda, Inc. continues to lead open source projects like Anaconda, NumPy and SciPy that form the foundation of modern data science. Anaconda’s flagship product, Anaconda Enterprise, allows organizations to secure, govern, scale and extend Anaconda to deliver actionable insights that drive businesses and industries forward. From that’s explanation so Anaconda is an open-source package manager, environment manager, and distribution of the Python and R programming languages. It is commonly used for large-scale data processing, scientific computing, and predictive analytics, serving data scientists, developers, business analysts, and those working in DevOps.


This article will guide you how to install Anaconda with installer bash script provided from official Anaconda distribution. Go to and find the latest Anaconda version. In this article, I used the latest version of Anaconda2-5.0.1. I’m using python 2 generally, both python 3 and python 2 have the same installation step. You can following this section if you run with python 3


Open your terminal and change to tmp directory to download installer bash script


$ cd /tmp

Use curl to download the link that you copied from the Anaconda website:


$ curl -O /tmp

You will get the downloading process in your terminal with Curl

Now we will check the integrity of downloaded installer bash script using with cryptographic hash verification sha256sum

$ sha256sum

You will see output like this. This output is based on Anaconda version you installed before. If you install with another version of Anaconda you can go here to get your sum


As long the output sha256sum is matched with the official your download process is full completely without losing dependencies or libraries.


Now, we ready to install our downloaded bash script, write this code to your terminal

$ bash

Replace with your Anaconda version downloaded before.


You will get this output

Welcome to Anaconda2 5.0.1

In order to continue the installation process, please review the license

Just press enter and you will directed to next step

As long as you agree, type yes.


You will prompted to install Anacoda to your directory

Anaconda2 will now be installed into this location:

The installation process will continue, it may take some time. Once it’s complete you’ll receive the following output:

installation finished.
Do you wish the installer to prepend the Anaconda2 install location
to PATH in your /home/fuadajip/.bashrc ? [yes|no]

Hit enter to add anaconda to your path you will get this output too

Appending source /home/fuadajip/anaconda2/bin/activate to /home/fuadajip/.bashrc
A backup will be made to: /home/fuadajip/.bashrc-anaconda2.bak

For this change to become active, you have to open a new terminal.

Congratulation you have finished install Anaconda in your system.

Now we must refresh .bashrc file with this following command

$ source ~/.bashrc

Once you have done that, you can verify your install by making use of the conda command, for example with list:

conda list

You’ll receive output of all the packages you have available through the Anaconda installation:
